6 Step Summary

What is Lectio Divina?

Lectio divina is a reflective reading of the Scriptures which leads to prayer and transformation of life.

Lectio divina arises from, and is directed to, our personal relationship with Jesus.

It is a personal encounter with Jesus within the Word of Sacred Scripture. It is directed to deepening this relationship and transforming our life as a disciple of Jesus.

Lectio Divina

John Paul II said: "It is especially necessary that listening to the word of God should become a life-giving encounter, in the ancient and ever valid tradition of lectio divina, which draws from the biblical text the living Word which questions, directs and shapes our lives."

Lectio Divina on Your iPod

The clever Jesuits in Britain have re-invented the spiritual art of lectio divina using podcasting.

Lectio divina is the name given to the practice of spiritual reflection and meditation on scripture each day, to hear the Word of God speaking to your everyday situation. The method involves dedicating a period of time in a place away from distractions. The iPod ear-piece is the key to creating this time and place. It can be on the way to work, walking during lunch break or sitting quietly by oneself.

“Pray-as-you-go” follows the traditional lectio divina steps –
a preparation phase to take you away from the world’s distractions;
an opening prayer;
a purposeful reading of a selected scripture passage;
a meditation and reflection on the scripture as it applies in your life;
a response by opening your heart to God in prayer;
a contemplative listening free of pre-occupation, allowing God to speak to your heart;
a review of the scripture for words or phrases that will stay with you during the day;
a closing prayer.
